Brexit news this week, from the Express:
Brexit LIVE: Theresa May suffers humiliating BREXIT DEFEAT as MPs launch REMAIN REBELLION
The Remain rebellion narrowly lost but the defeat referred to was actually on the vote for 4 amendments tabled by Jacob Rees-Mogg and his ERG, and the defeat was effectively a defeat for Theresa May’s Chequers plan. (One amendment was amended slightly with MPs voting to keep the UK part of Europe’s medicines framework). The defeat prompted this headline at ITV news:
Is Chequers plan dead already?
One amendment called for the EU to reciprocate on the collection of customs tariffs, something it is thought they are very unlikely to accept. Another article at ITV news asked if people should have been focusing on another amendment put forward by the ERG:
Have Jacob Rees-Mogg and the ERG achieved a decisive step towards no-deal Brexit?
This was the amendment relating to the N. Ireland border issue.
From the Guardian:
‘We’re the opposition’: Rees-Mogg and his European Research Group
“They are a single-minded pressure group within the Conservative party who have had little regard for any long-term damage they cause the party for decades now,” says the former education secretary Nicky Morgan. “They are our version of Momentum.”
Perhaps feeling that May’s government is struggling, Remainers increased their calls for a second referendum. John Major is quoted by the Evening Standard:
Brexit latest: Second referendum ‘morally justified’ as poll shows support for staying in the EU
The above article quotes a poll from the Sunday Times:
Remaining in the EU would beat leaving with no deal by 54 per cent to 46, according to a YouGov poll for The Sunday Times.
However you may remember that the polls also predicted that Remain would win the EU referendum. From the Daily Telegraph (2016):
How right or wrong were the polls about the EU referendum?
Is the mainstream media campaigning for Remain all over again?
Even back in 2016 John Major was arguing the case for a second referendum, so this is nothing new from him. Brexit Central had this to say about that (from Nov 2016):
Sir John Major denied the public a referendum on Maastricht - how ironic he should want a second one on Brexit
Former Secretary of State for Education Justine Greening also backed a second referendum this week:
Justine Greening desperately demands SECOND REFERENDUM and refuses to back Brexit ‘fudge’
From The Daily Telegraph (premium):
Dominic Raab: Britain will refuse to pay £39 billion divorce bill to Brussels if the EU fails to agree trade deal
Guido Fawkes reports that the first no deal legislation has become law:
First “No Deal Ready” Legislation Becomes Law
The electoral commission was under fire this week for investigating the Leave campaign and not the Remain campaign:
Electoral Commission must be impartial
Of course we wouldn’t expect the BBC to mind such a bias however:
Brexit: Vote Leave broke electoral law, says Electoral Commission
What about the fact the government produced pro-Remain leaflets at great cost and distributed them to everyone in the country, many were asking?
A Channel 4 program investigated Aaron Banks for suspected Russian connections:
Exclusive investigation: Court documents claim new Arron Banks links with Russia
Maybe the threat to our democracy is a lot closer to home however – many were wondering when the globalist influence of social media bias on our political scene is going to be investigated.
From the Daily Telegraph:
MPs who fiddle their expenses will be given anonymity under new plans
The appeal took place on Wednesday but the judgement was delayed until the end of July. From Breitbart (the title is slightly misleading, it’s the judgement that is delayed not the appeal):
Appeal Against ‘Prejudiced’ Tommy Robinson Jailing Delayed
From The Secret Barrister:
Tommy Robinson’s appeal: what happened?
The above article quotes the Independent which had a blow by blow account of the appeal:
Tommy Robinson appeal latest updates: Judges retire to consider judgement on whether to free EDL founder from prison
From the Daily Mail:
Judges in the DOCK: Three immigration judges and six lawyers appear in court over plot to ‘scam legal aid system out of £12.6million’ – as one of accused slams ‘racist witch hunt’
From The Express:
Hungary to WITHDRAW from UN migration pact amid security fears of ‘ENCOURAGING migrants‘
From the Daily Mail (from last week):
Theresa May praises the ‘fantastic contribution’ made by immigrants as she dismisses Trump’s claims Britain is ‘losing its culture’ because of the influx
What seems to be beyond doubt is that knife crime is going up sharply for some reason, but apparently only 9 out of 10 crimes results in a prosecution, according to the Daily Telegraph:
Murder, stabbings and robbery soar – but no one charged in 9 out of 10 crimes
From the Express (Sunday 22nd July):
Worcester ACID ATTACK: Boy, 3, seriously inured in ‘deliberate’ assault – manhunt launched
Well we used to have a culture where people did not attack others with acid at least.
They are now even predicting hate crime surges in the future! From the Guardian:
Brexit will trigger rise in hate crimes, warns police watchdog
From the Daily Mail (April):
More than 10,000 children in care went missing last year amid fears of exploitation by child grooming gangs
We were reminded of an article from 2015 about Labour politicians’ lack of interest in the subject from the Daily Mail:
A blind eye to child abuse: Whistleblowers warned Labour leadership favourite Jeremy Corbyn of paedophiles preying on children on his doorstep – but claim he did NOTHING
Most of the scandals involving child rape gangs have so far been outside London, but the above article suggests that there is a large ignored problem in the capital as well, right at the heart of trendy Islington.
An article appeared in the Sun suggesting that:
CHILD SEX RING RAP Home Office knew about the Rotherham sex abuse scandal 16 years ago, report reveals
From the Independent:
Ukip leader Gerard Batten calls Muhammad a paedophile at Tommy Robinson rally
Hope not Hate and Tell MAMA both complained about his comments according to the above article. One commenter called Zoop responded to the article:
This just in, leader of UKIP states indisputable facts that Independent doesn’t like people talking about.
You wouldn’t have thought the Union Jack would be illegal in the United Kingdom. From altnewsmedia:
Union Jack spat on, Brits told to leave Durham
The denial the Durham Miners issued perhaps inadvertently admitted the very thing they were trying to deny:
‘For Britain’ supporters led from Durham Miners’ Gala ‘for own safety’
The Durham Miners’ Gala is now and has always been, a celebration of trade unionism, unity and internationalism.
Right, so in other words carrying the Union Jack flag at this celebration of socialism and “internationalism” puts you at the risk of being violently assaulted, hence the use of the phrase “for your own safety”.
