Other Items That Caught Our Eye This Week - w/e 19 January

by The Participator – 20 Jan 2019

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well.

A dramatic week for Brexit this week for a change, after endless weeks of rumours, speculation, prevarication, and delays. Theresa May’s deal was defeated by 432-202, the largest defeat in UK Parliament’s history apparently:

BREXIT VOTE LIVE: May’s deal DESTROYED - 100 Labour MPs prepare SECOND REFERENDUM plot

It sounded as if May was expecting parliament to come up with a deal on behalf of the government, she apparently said:

“The House has spoken. It’s clear that the House does not support this deal.”

“But tonight’s vote tells us nothing about what it does support.”

Corbyn then tabled a vote of no confidence, but May narrowly survived it 325-306. From Breitbart:

All eyes are now on the amendments, as we expect that MPs will try to wrest power from the government in order to derail Brexit altogether. Senior Conservative backbencher Nick Boles was planning to make a no deal Brexit impossible, from the Express:

There were rumours of an imminent general election with the intention of forcing acceptance of May’s deal. From the Express:

The PM wasn’t apparently so pleased with him though. From the Times:

Theresa May to block John Bercow’s peerage

Esther McVey stated that she and her fellow ministers were given long legal documents just 2 days before discussions were due to begin. From the Express:
