Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well.


The likelihood of a second referendum seemed to be diminishing this week. From Politics Home:

Cross-party MPs drop ‘People’s Vote’ amendment with blast at Jeremy Corbyn

There was some confusion however, order-order claimed the press conference had not been sanctioned by the People’s Vote:

Attempts to block a “no deal” Brexit are still in progress. Yvette Cooper’s amendment is due for a vote on Tuesday next week. From the Guardian:

A substantial number of May’s own ministers were also conspiring to block a no deal. From Politics Home:

Attempts to extend article 50 beyond 29th March were also still in progress. From the Express:

John Longworth, chairman of Leave Means Leave, threatened legal action in the event of an extension however. He said:

We would challenge any move by the government to cancel Brexit.

It started to seem as if the attempts at extension might not succeed in any case since all 27 EU countries would have to agree to the extension and it started to look doubtful that they would. From the Express:

Extending Article 50 would require unanimous agreement in the European Council, the grouping of EU heads of state and government.

The rumours of a delay are still coming however. From the Express:

A new trade deal with Israel has been secured. From the Express:

Project Fear was undermined further this week. From the Express:

The BBC was rebuked by Brittany Ferries:
