Other Items That Caught Our Eye This Week - w/e 23 March

by The Participator – 24 Mar 2019

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well.

There is now a question mark over whether we will leave on the 29th March as the EU 27 have agreed to either a short extension to April 12th if May’s Withdrawal Agreement is not passed, or a longer extension to May 22nd if it is. From Breitbart:

EU Leaders Ignore PM May’s Brexit Extension Request, Set Their Own April Deadline

Andrew Neil had this to say on Twitter:

For Tory Brexiteers still dreaming we leave on no deal March 29: extension agreed and signed off by EU27 is a decision binding in international law. EU law, not domestic law, created the 29th March legal “cliff-edge.” Failure to amend exit date in UK law does not lead to No Deal

Theresa May is going to allow a vote on a second referendum and a vote to revoke Article 50 altogether (2 of 7 options). From the Express:

‘She’ll be FINISHED’ Theresa May faces backlash after allowing vote to CANCEL Brexit

The seven options still being considered (not necessarily in this order):

So it seems we’re right back to where we started in June 2016, trying to answer the basic question – what sort of Brexit should it be, and will there even be a Brexit at all.

The speaker Bercow however blocked a 3rd vote this week, and if May thinks she is going to lose she may not even push for a 3rd vote anyway. From the BBC:

(It) is a decision … made in light of some extremely disturbing material being circulated prior, during and after the Christchurch attacks

The above article was short on details about the reason for the book ban however, mentioning only:

Peterson is posing with a man in a T-shirt that says “I’m a Proud ISLAMAPHOBE” and, in smaller print, lists inflammatory slurs against Muslims and concludes: “I love dogs, bacon and the FREEDOM to hate Islam but not the individual.”

In Denmark, allegedly members of Hizb-ut-Tahrir gathered in a square and were separated by a police line from counter-protestors waving flags.
