Other Items That Caught Our Eye This Week - w/e 18 May

by The Participator – 19 May 2019

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well.

The European elections are next week on the 23rd May. Don’t forget to vote! Spoiling your ballot won’t help, the Participator urges readers to vote for the parties that believe in equality before the law and a meaningful degree of freedom of speech. From the Express:

European Elections 2019 FULL GUIDE: How to vote, how EU elections work, all the candidates

Key point is this is a proportional representation election so just vote for the party that you think has your best interests at heart.

Desperate attempts to thwart the Brexit Party are afoot. From the Daily Mail:

‘That’s going to get a helluva lot of Xs’: How Farage’s Brexit party logo is cleverly drawn ‘to show people where to vote’

The BBC’s Sunday morning politics program will have no representatives of the Brexit Party:

Marr Plans No Pro-Brexit Politicans on Last Show Before Euro-Elections

A Brexit Party rally was apparently blocked by people who don’t believe in democracy:

Remainers have blocked the roads around the venue to stop Brexiteers getting in – bear with us – rally likely start @ 7.10pm.

Remainers have run out of arguments so they're now resorting to physically blocking us – but they won't succeed #EnoughIsEnough pic.twitter.com/c17jPFhkGo

Burger King the fast food restaurant appeared to be encouraging their customers to engage in political violence:

Dear people of Scotland.

We’re selling milkshakes all weekend.

Have fun.

Love BK #justsaying

Meanwhile here is a truly inspirational speech from a Change UK party MP Joan Ryan (formerly with the Labour Party). From order-order:

Cringe UK: Hold Out Your Hands

Nigel Farage and Brexit Party MEPs won’t get parliamentary passes if they win apparently. From the Daily Mail:

Nigel Farage and Brexit Party MEPs WON’T get coveted Parliamentary passes if they win Euro elections under Lords plans to strip them of rights

Theresa May’s Withdrawal Bill will be dragged out of its grave and further resuscitation attempts made. From the BBC:

Brexit: MPs to vote on withdrawal bill in early June

From the Sun:

DONE FOUR Theresa May faces a catastrophic three-digit defeat on Brexit deal again, claim Brexiteer Tories

We featured an article by moraymint some time ago, he announced at his blog this week that he will be standing as a Brexit Party candidate:

From Breitbart:

Delingpole: Tommy Robinson is on Trial Again for the Same Offence

Tommy on the campaign trail:

Tommy Robinson “Children are having bricks and bottles thrown at them by gangs of muslims”

“We specifically chose not to go into the town centre, they came out of their areas to attack our campaign. Watch the media!”

Immediately the mainstream media started publishing articles with headlines clearly designed to suggest the disturbances were Tommy’s fault. From the Daily Mail:

Violence breaks out at Tommy Robinson campaign event as masked supporters clash with crowds shouting ‘racist scum’, bricks are thrown and police cars are damaged in Oldham

However looking at the video clips and images in the above article the trouble all seems to be coming from one side. Those shown wearing masks are all Muslims in these images as well, despite the Daily Mail’s headline ambiguously referring to “masked supporters”.

From the Sun:

TOMMY TROUBLE FLARES Tommy Robinson rally erupts in violence as ‘bricks and eggs thrown into crowd’

The BBC refers to “clashes” despite the apparent one-sided nature of the disturbances:

Tommy Robinson: Trouble flares at event in Oldham

Greater Manchester Police said “objects including eggs and bricks” were thrown and there was damage to two police vehicles.

The force said there were no reported injuries and rumours someone had been stabbed were false.

There is some video footage of the object throwing here in the video clip in this tweet:

Disgraceful. Police allowed this to happen in Oldham today whilst Tommy Robinson MEP candidate was on his campaign trail. I noticed a legal observer and he didn't seem to be doing very much either!! pic.twitter.com/MAEkMFAadm

The police are clearly taking sides as well, interfering in the political process. From the Guardian:

Tone down speeches to avoid hate crime, MEP candidates told

There was apparently no reference made to any specific speech however, just vague references to “inciting hatred” etc..

Two of Tommy’s supporters challenged the police sergeant who was apparently in charge (see video clip in this tweet):

— Cruella (@CruellaDeBrexit) May 19, 2019

Questions need to be asked about the way the police handled the incident:

Police escort a masked up group of men towards where a prospective MEP is holding a campaign rally, they know women and children are there listening, but still they escort the group. pic.twitter.com/yQheytCofT

Apparently some of the Muslims belong to a group calling themselves the Muslim Defence League (MDL), some footage of the disturbances showing the heavy police presence here:

A police van with facial recognition cameras was filming passers by in East London. When one man refused to show his face they arrested him and took his picture anyway (a BBC News clip in the tweet):

I can’t believe what I’m seeing! While running a facial recognition pilot, one man (understandably imho) covered himself up. The police forced him to show his face (& then fined him for disorderly conduct). This is dangerous & terrifying. pic.twitter.com/QdG2VPGyfE

— Jamie Bartlett (@JamieJBartlett) May 15, 2019

Needless to say no women in niqabs were arrested and forced to show their faces!!! We wonder if the police have thought this policy through …

How many of you agree that the punishments described in the Koran and the Sunnah, whether it is death, whether it is stoning for adultery, whatever it is, if it is from Allah and his messenger, that is the best punishment ever possible for humankind …

Notice the reactions of “Danny the Red” who is also on the panel. He is known for controversial views on paedophilia that he expressed during the 1970s.
