Other Items That Caught Our Eye This Week - w/e 8 June

by The Participator – 9 Jun 2019

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well.

Labour narrowly won the by-election with 10,484 votes, the Brexit Party came second with 9,801 votes, the Conservatives got only 7,243 votes.

There was quite a lot of commentary on social media about possible postal voting fraud. Politicalite had this claim about a campaigner called Tariq Mahmood:

EXCLUSIVE: Convicted Vote-Rigger Out Campaigning Today For Labour In Peterborough

The story from 2008, from Peterborough Today:

Vote-rigging former mayor jailed

The above article states that Mohammed Choudhary, Maqbool Hussein, and Tariq Mahmood were jailed for vote fraud in that year. Quote:

“They were able to get hold of postal and proxy votes which belonged to voters in the Central Ward,” said Anthony Leonard QC.

“They arranged for postal and ballot papers to be sent not to the voter but to addresses with which each defendant was connected.”

Politicalite had some more to say on the election in a second article:

EXCLUSIVE: Fraud, Convicts, And Ethnic Exploitation – How Peterborough Was REALLY Won

The Daily Mail also reported:

Labour’s by-election victory is marred by claims that a convicted vote rigger was at the centre of campaign after he was pictured with Corbyn and new MP at centre of anti-Semitism storm

The article has a picture showing a smiling Jeremy Corbyn shaking hands with Tariq Mahmood.

The Guardian claimed that turnout among postal voters in this week’s by-election was 69.4%.

Seven reasons Labour won the Peterborough byelection

Labour realised its core supporters might suffer from voter fatigue after four years in which there have been two general elections, an EU referendum, and local and European elections. So Labour voters were encouraged, more than any other year, to vote by post

According to the BBC turnout overall was only 48.4%, considerably down from the last general election when the turnout was 67.5%.
