Weekly Roundup Of News And Opinion - w/e 31 August

by The Participator – 1 Sep 2019

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well. Please remember this is not intended to be a comprehensive news round up.

BREXIT NEWS – X DAYS TO GO

Brexit looked a little more likely this week, after PM Boris Johnson moved to prorogue (suspend) the rogue Remainer majority parliament. From the BBC:

Parliament suspension: Queen approves PM’s plan

Parliament will be suspended from the 2nd week in September until October 14. From the Express:

Brexit news: What is proroguing parliament? Does this mean No Deal Brexit is more likely?

However the suspension will not begin until September 9th, so the Remainer MPs will have almost a week in which to cause trouble and attempt to derail Brexit again. Then after October 14th they will have an additional 2 weeks.

The UK government is currently refusing to accept the so-called “backstop” provision in the proposed agreement with the EU. Just a reminder from the Express about what the backstop is:

Brexit backstop explained: A really simple guide to this complicated topic

Also from the Express, news that a Scottish judge has rejected a Remainer bid against the proroguing:

Brexit VICTORY: Scottish judge REJECTS Remainer bid to stop Boris suspending Parliament

From the Independent:

MEPs plan to trigger EU rule of law investigation into Boris Johnson’s government over suspension of parliament

From the Express:

Brexit bombshell: Rebel Tory MPs will be AXED and deselected if they try and block no deal

CONSERVATIVE PARTY NEWS

MIGRANT CRISIS – UK

40,000 failed asylum seekers still in UK

Priti Patel gave the Home Office 72 hours. From the Daily Mail:

Priti Patel gives the Home Office 72 hours to solve the migration crisis as she demands action after 1,451 people tried to cross the Channel this year

CRIME WAVE – UK

Another incident proving that the rich and famous are not immune from the UK’s crime wave. From the Express:

Paul McCartney: Beatles star’s grandson mugged at knifepoint ‘He felt like a coward’

POLICE FARCE

A policeman disobeyed the order not to dance at the Notting Hill Carnival (video clip in this tweet) (WARNING: Some people may find this display repulsive):

An incident involving protestors quickly escalated, a man was arrested for challenging masked antifa agitators. From Vlad Tepes’s blog (includes video footage):

Something dramatically wrong with this encounter in UK

FREEDOM OF SPEECH UNDER ATTACK AS USUAL

The usual suspects are pushing for laws against “far-right non-violent extremism” again. From the Guardian:

New law needed to take on far-right extremism, says Blair thinktank

Quote:

Azmina Siddique, a policy adviser at the institute, said: “These groups are far from innocuous. Only last month, Generation Identity England activists gathered outside the Tower of London dressed as Isis militants and simulated the beheading of two anti-racism activists. It is time that policymakers acted – by defining extremism and designating hateful groups – to stop such obviously malicious acts.”

Under the proposed legislation, an avowedly non-violent group such as Generation Identity would be banned from media appearances.

From the Independent:

Government ‘must ban far-right hate groups from making media appearances’, report says

Jacqui Smith, the former Labour home secretary who is now chair of the Jo Cox Foundation, expressed similar views apparently:

“What starts as hate-fuelled rhetoric can end in the terrorist murder of a serving MP, wife and mother …”

FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND BELIEF STATEMENT

Meanwhile the UK Government release a statement:

PM underlines UK’s commitment to freedom of religion or belief

Sub-title:

PM outlines UK support for freedom of religion or belief as Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon announces new support for work to help victims of hostility

Quote:

In light of mounting evidence that Christians suffer the most widespread persecution, we asked the Anglican Bishop of Truro to carry out an independent review to ensure that our work in this area matched the scale of the problem.

JIHAD NEWS

From the Birmingham Mail:

Birmingham ISIS fighter who ‘beheaded more than 100 while claiming £10k benefits’ is captured

From the BBC (last week):

Man jailed over Sheffield McDonald’s machete attack

The BBC only make reference to the man’s exclamations that included the word “God”. Quote:

“If you don’t believe in God… I’ll kill you all.”

However in this article from the South Yorkshire Times, Allah is also mentioned:

How Sheffield police officers detained machete-wielding drug user in less than two minutes

Quote:

Daouda Sy sent terrified shoppers fleeing in fear of their lives, believing they were in the midst of a terrorist atrocity

‘if you don’t believe in God… I will kill you all… you best believe in Allah’.

Panic over then, clearly nothing to do with terrorism.
