Weekly Roundup Of News And Opinion - w/e 23 November

by The Participator – 24 Nov 2019

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well. Please remember this is not intended to be a comprehensive news round up.

Less than 3 weeks to go before the UK’s next General Election.

BREAKING NEWS (Sunday 24th) – The Conservative Party Manifesto has been unveiled:

Our manifesto gets Brexit done and unleashes the potential of the whole country

The Brexit Party manifesto is summarized here by the Telegraph:

The Labour manifesto was revealed. From Breitbart:

Left leaning website Harry’s Place examined the proposal for a 4 day working week:

No free lunch

From the Sun:

From the Express:

The Liberal Democrats also promised a spending splurge. From the BBC:

General election 2019: Lib Dems promise £50bn ‘windfall’ from stopping Brexit

Many accusations of BBC bias were heard this week, following a Question Time which apparently had ONLY ONE Leave supporting panellist, and a series of party leadership appearances on TV where audience members were allowed to put questions. From the Express:

BBC Question Time: Viewers promise to ‘switch off’ as panel ‘full of Remainers’ announced

In the event there was one Leave supporter on the panel, a writer at the Telegraph:

My Question Time debut left me with the sense that the disconnect between the metropolitan elite and the public is only growing

From the Daily Mail:

BBC faces bias row after Boris Johnson is confronted by hostile audience on Question Time and repeatedly heckled

A claim was made that Boris was interrupted 4 times more than Corbyn, and more than 2 times more than the other candidates.

Also in news about TV bias, from the Express:

Furious viewers promise to boycott Sky News over Bercow announcement – ‘TURNING OFF!’

Another claim was made that an audience member, who didn’t ask a question but praised Corbyn’s stance, was actually Liam Shrivastava, a Communications Officer for the Labour Party. From order-order:

Labour Comms Officer Was the Question Time Liar

Since parliament is now suspended for the election campaign, there is not much news on Brexit again this week. Dominic Raab did rule out a no-deal exit apparently however, according to the Sun:

NO DEAL? NO CHANCE Dominic Raab rules out prospect of UK leaving the EU without a deal

From the Express:

Judge’s fury at drug gangs as she cages Jodie Chesney killers for life

A video was widely circulated on social media this week, showing a brutal attack purportedly in Bethnal Green, London, by what appear to be youths of Pakistani origin brutally beating a young person (thought to be female by some) in broad daylight. The victim is left lying apparently unconscious (disturbing video clip in this tweet):

I first thought this was a man being #Attacked here ( which is still bad ) but in fact it's a woman who's being #brutally attacked by two Pakistani men. #BethnalGreen #London pic.twitter.com/50gyXXElke

— Antifa Public Watch APW (@WeAreAPW) November 17, 2019

It may have been a homophobic attack judging by some of the comments. Presumably the footage is recent as it was circulating this week, but we cannot be certain of that.

By comparison, the BBC publicized a purely verbal incident on their front page with this article:

Man wanted over anti-Semitic abuse on Northern Line

The article made much of the fact that a Muslim woman in a hijab intervened.

All part and parcel of living in a big city these days we suppose. From My London:

Police warning as gang targets London Underground passengers for phones and airpods

Meanwhile in Birmingham, a machete wielding gang of adolescents terrorized a cinema complex. From the Mirror:

Vlad Tepes interviewed Fahrenheit211 about his recent arrest:

Lord Pearson has also come under fire from the Tell Mama pressure group, as he reveals in this fascinating interview with Carl Benjamin (aka Sargon of Akkad):

Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff gets to the heart of the problem with today’s legal attitude towards speech in this interview with Vlad Tepes:

Interview with Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff, done in Montreal, November 19, 2019

Quote (speaking of recent legal verdicts):

The truth up to now was always a defence, but now it is no longer a defence …

Her book is appropriately titled “The Truth Is No Defence”.

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen (famous for the Ali G and Borat characters) joined the chorus of virtue-signalling comedians and called for social media censorship, he also praised the “Anti-Defamation League”, and he condemned Islamophobia (predictably without attempting to define what the word means). He also made a dig at Breitbart saying:

On the internet, everything can appear equally legitimate. Breitbart resembles the BBC, the fictitious Protocols of the Elders of Zion look as valid as an ADL report.

I believe that it’s time for a fundamental re-think of social media and how it spreads hate, conspiracies, and lies.

A video of the speech is included in this article from ZDNet (trigger warning for those who care about freedom of speech):

Sacha Baron Cohen gave the greatest speech on why social networks need to be kept in check

As pointed out by some on the very social media he was condemning, the restrictions could well affect his own output.

Apparently Youtube will soon be shutting down “non-commercially viable” channels. Given the way that Youtube has been demonetizing certain channels, it seems likely that the Youtubers affected may turn out to be on only one side of the political spectrum. From Techspot:

YouTube can now delete accounts that aren’t “commercially viable”

More pressure was put on the UK government to allow jihadi families to return to the UK. From the Evening Standard:

Bring home 60 more British children trapped in Syrian camps, ministers urged

A story from the UN appeared apparently on the numbers of children in detention. Oh wait, those are figures from 2015 during the Obama administration (story promptly disappears). From Reuters:

No replacement story will be issued

From the Gateway Pundit:

Finally something that may cheer our readers up after all the bad news. A comedian gives an entertaining commentary on the recent disastrous interview of Prince Andrew by the BBC:
