Weekly Roundup Of News And Opinion - w/e 2 November

by The Participator – 3 Nov 2019

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well. Please remember this is not intended to be a comprehensive news round up.

Our Brexit clock has been set back to X again after the UK’s non departure from the European Union on Thursday (it was supposed to be happening on Thursday but it didn’t); so much for “dying in a ditch“. From Breitbart:

Boris Formally Accepts Brexit Delay, Begs EU Not to Delay AGAIN in 2020

Did Theresa May have the last laugh when she scheduled our fake exit from the EU for Halloween, did she leave us wondering whether we were in for a trick or a treat? Has Boris let the UK down, or is it all the Remainer parliament’s fault? Please let us know what you think in the comments below.

The new Brexit deadline is 31st January. From order-order:

EU Grant ‘Flextension’ to 31 January 2020

Finally a General Election is agreed, with a vote in parliament voting 438-20 to hold the election on 12th December. From the Express:

Electoral campaigning has commenced.

Some sobering analysis from John Ward at the Slog:

VOTING TO GET REAL BREXIT? Some sobering thoughts….

A little good news for a change, as a number of Remainer MPs give up on trying to stop Brexit it seems (it’s an exhausting business, frustrating the will of the people, apparently). From the Daily Mail:

‘Exhausted’ ex-Tory Heidi Allen leads exodus of MPs quitting the Commons at election including Ken Clarke, Justine Greening and Winston Churchill’s grandson Nicholas Soames

So far more than 50 MPs have announced they will be standing down before this election, although this is not as many as in 2010 (yet, time will tell). The BBC had a full list:

Which MPs are standing down at the election?

There are quite a few well-known Remainers in the list including Ken Clarke, Justine Greening, Vince Cable, Jo Johnson (brother of Boris), John Bercow the Speaker, former Home Secretary Amber Rudd (who barred Lauren Southern from entering the country after her “Allah Is Gay” campaign), but also some Leavers as well, including Kate Hoey.

Here is the Brexit Party’s announcement on their planned strategy (the strategy now seems to amount to a full on campaign in competition for all seats with all parties, no election pacts seem to have been made as far as we can understand):

A few days earlier it seemed as if the Brexit Party was only planning to target Labour Leave seats, at least according to the Daily Mail:

Nigel Farage says his Brexit Party will target Labour Leave seats rather than Tory ones ‘to clear out the Remainer Parliament’ – amid Conservative fears the strategy could STILL deny Boris Johnson a majority

The Brexit Party is putting forward some ideas for electoral reform. From Breitbart:

Quote from John McDonnell:

“We’re going to have an immigration policy which has as much freedom of movement as possible.”

In the great leader’s own words (video clip of Corbyn speaking in this tweet):

There is apparently a push for new hate speech laws in the Republic of Ireland. From the Irish Times (17th Oct):

The Irish Times view on hate crime: the case for new law

Not surprisingly perhaps, the above article is supporting the push for hate speech laws, quote:

Social media is tremendously useful, but it can also be immensely destructive and harmful. Hate speech is particularly insidious and needs to be tackled in a coherent way.

A clear distinction needs to be drawn between what is covered by the description of hate speech and what is merely offensive. The distinction is often not easy. That makes the case for great care in framing any new legislation but it does not justify inaction.

Case closed then, the Irish must have hate speech laws, the Irish Times have decreed so! Also from the Irish Times (24th Oct):

Public asked for views on proposed ‘hate crime’ laws

From Breitbart:

We might start doing a regular Top of the Pops style world social media rankings item as we have been noticing that the former near monopolies of Facebook and Twitter in the social media space seem to be losing ground to rivals:

Since around the end of August, Facebook has been slowly falling and has gone from 3rd to 7th place.

Since mid August, Twitter has fallen from 15th to 35th, quite a drop, after already having fallen previously from 11th to 15th.

Is the practice of shadow banning those on the right starting to seriously alienate their users perhaps? One rival whose rise may partly explain their decline is Telegram, which has risen from 256th to 194th place in the same time period, but there may be more behind these statistics. It may be too early for celebrations.

Also in social media news, apparently (presumably paid only) political advertising will no longer be allowed on Twitter. From Jack Dorsey:

We’ve made the decision to stop all political advertising on Twitter globally. We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought. Why? A few reasons…

— jack (@jack) October 30, 2019

Finally a little good news item to cheer us all up. From the BBC:

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi: US releases first images of raid on compound

Note – Please note that we are dependent on the veracity of news reports provided by other news sources. It is not our intention to knowingly quote “Fake News” (except where stated as satire), but we do sometimes quote the BBC when other sources are unavailable.
