Weekly Roundup Of News And Opinion - w/e 7 December

**** ELECTION SPECIAL ****

by The Participator – 8 Dec 2019

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well. Please remember this is not intended to be a comprehensive news round up.

THE LOOMING ELECTION

The General Election will be held next week on Thursday 12th December.

Controversy was raging this week over Labour's plan for a 4 day working week. From the Telegraph:

From the Independent:

From the Express:

Further controversy surrounded Corbyn's previous claims that the Conservative Party were planning to sell off the NHS. From the Guardian:

Quote:

Leak was seized on by Corbyn as proof Tories want NHS to be part of trade talks with US

There were defections from the Brexit Party. From the Express:

The Leave EU campaign backed the defections:

Quote:

“Three Brexit Party MEPs and John Longworth, who had the whip removed last night, have left the party to urge voters to back the Conservatives on Thursday and help Boris get the majority he needs to get Brexit done. A bold move, but in our view the right one for the country.”

Channel 4 News was forced to apologize for an error on Twitter:

Quote:

“Boris Johnson says “people of talent” not “people of colour.” Our earlier tweet was a mistake. We misheard and we apologise.”

Accusations of anti-semitism in the Labour Party and Islamophobia in the Conservative Party continued this week. Opinion on the debate from the Telegraph:

Corbyn was even accused of sowing divisions between Muslim and Hindu communities by one Conservative candidate. From the Express:

Labour Party activists were asked what they thought about certain quotes from Boris Johnson (but, as the interviewer afterwards revealed, they were in fact quotes from Jeremy Corbyn):

Quote:

“VIDEO: LABOUR ACTIVISTS ADMIT CORBYN IS UNFIT FOR OFFICE **WARNING** CONTAINS EXTREME RACISM https://t.co/sGBrkbDtKd”

An article from the Guardian about one of the claims the interviewer makes:

Quote:

This signature text, for which the Labour leader wrote a foreword, is inseparable from Hobson’s antisemitism

Jay Beecher from Vote Watch pointed out similar hypocrisy from the front ranks of the Labour Party:

Quote:

“Making observational jokes about items of clothing isn't racist. But I bet the left would all agree that saying you wouldn't allow someone who wears a Burqa to teach your kids or look after your Mum would be...until they find out it was LABOUR'S @EmilyThornberry who said it: https://t.co/TAhQEEEBFJ”

The Liberal Democrats' progressive credentials were on display:

Quote:

“We will completely reform of the Gender Recognition Act, removing the requirement for medical reports, scrap the fee and recognise non-binary gender identities. #GenderRecognition #BrighterFuture #GE2019 @LibDems https://t.co/J4XWaoFlfw”

However it was revealed that there may in fact be a financial incentive behind this campaign message. From the Times:

This election is becoming unusual for the strength of feelings on display, at least from one side of the political spectrum. From the Express, an incident in Kent:

Another similar incident occurred in Westhoughton, Greater Manchester. From the Express:

From the Daily Mail:

From Kent Live:

Quote:

The woman's 16-year-old daughter - who was being treated during the row - feared she would be hurt

Another tweet from Jay Beecher of Vote Watch:

Quote:

“UPDATE RE PBORO VOTE SCANDAL: Since my investigation Pboro Cll are now implementing ID checks to enter the count room, issuing lanyards, anyone handing-in postal votes at polling stations will be asked their name & address etc. Step forward, but not good enough.”

A related article from the Peterborough Telegraph:

Quote:

Forensic evidence, extensive CCTV and raids on properties – no, this is not CSI Miami but a taste of the extensive efforts made to deter electoral fraud in Peterborough.

On a lighter note, here is some footage from a Labour focus group (video clip in the tweet):

Quote:

“Outstanding! #channel4news actually left London and went to Birmingham to see a focus group with @UKLabour voters. They didn't get the answers they were expecting A MUST watch! #GE2019 https://t.co/XbvshDMa0D”

Let's just hope there aren't any banana peels included!
