Weekly Roundup Of News And Opinion - w/e 4 January

by The Participator – 5 Jan 2020

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well. Please remember this is not intended to be a comprehensive news round up.

SPOTLIGHT ON - THE CLIMATE CHANGE AGENDA

We were reminded of an article published in 2004, from the Guardian:

Quote:

A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.

2020 is here though and the weather in the UK is as mild as ever. The Guardian article attempted to shame the Bush administration:

The findings will prove humiliating to the Bush administration, which has repeatedly denied that climate change even exists.

Is the lack of a climate catastrophe in 2020 a bit humiliating for the Guardian now? Also:

Jeremy Symons, a former whistleblower at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said that suppression of the report for four months was a further example of the White House trying to bury the threat of climate change.

Is it time for the public to start questioning the climate change scientists' credentials perhaps? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

A tale of two weather forecasts, from Climate Dispatch:

Quote:

The Old Farmer’s Almanac forecast a brutally cold winter for 70% of the country. So far this year, the Almanac has been right on target. And in this frigid forecast, the Old Farmer’s Almanac has a high tech ally. That is the NASA Langley Research Laboratory.

Farmers in the US have seen steadily increasing yields according to the graph in this web page from Global Economy:

From the Times:

Meanwhile in Australia, bush fires have killed 17. Bernie Sanders was quick to blame lack of action on climate change:

Quote:

“I say to those who are delaying action on climate change: Look at the blood-red sky and unbreathable air in Australia because of raging forest fires. Our futures are all connected. That is why we must bring the world together and enact a Green New Deal. https://t.co/GBQQpDc4vE”

From Breitbart:

According to a news report, the police suspect arson:

Quote:

“Police are now working on the premise arson is to blame for much of the devastation caused this bushfire season. A strike force will investigate whether blazes were deliberately lit, and bring those responsible to justice. https://t.co/TWh1KQycs4 @ebatten7 #NSWFires #7NEWS https://t.co/Dul8dMFrZv”
