Weekly Roundup Of News And Opinion - w/e 1 February

by The Participator – 2 Feb 2020

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well. Please remember this is not intended to be a comprehensive news round up.

GREAT BRITAIN HAS LEFT THE EUROPEAN UNION!!!

Unless you're living on another planet you have probably heard the news that the United Kingdom is no longer a part of the European Union! Nigel Farage gave a speech:

Boris Johnson made a speech that was broadcast without the BBC's permission (video clip in this tweet):

Quote:

“Tonight we are leaving the European Union. https://t.co/zZBsrf4BLe”

The march out of the EU parliament, with flags waving and a bagpiper playing, was led by Ann Widdecombe (video clip in this tweet):

Quote:

“Brexit Party MEPs have left the European Parliament for the final time led by Ann Widdecombe. Bring the flag home. #BrexitDay https://t.co/BNcvfS4nO3”

From the BBC:

From the Express:

The demand was turned down according to the Scotsman:

BBC NEWS (NEWS ABOUT THE BBC)

From the Telegraph:

From the Express:

As you may recall, Jo Brand "joked" on a national radio program about throwing acid at Nigel Farage. This week it was revealed that Ofcom are not even going to investigate the complaints. From the Daily Mail:

Quote:

'I'm thinking why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid' and added: 'I'm not going to do it, it's purely a fantasy. But I think milkshakes are pathetic.'

From the Telegraph:

FREEDOM OF SPEECH UNDER ATTACK AS USUAL

From the Guardian:

It seems his accuser was guilty of posting racist tweets (images of the tweets in this tweet):

Quote:

“It turns out the chap who got Alastair Stewart sacked has quite a track record of playing the race card. Come on ITN, admit you got this one badly wrong by appeasing the 'woke' mob. Apologise to Alastair and give him his job back. #AlastairStewart”

From the Daily Mail:

The person apparently responsible for the sacking:

Quote:

“ITN is pleased to announce the appointment of Anna Mallett as our new CEO. Anna joins from BBC Studios, where she is Group Chief Operating Officer and MD, Production. She’ll take up her new post next year.”

Man of the hour Laurence Fox responded to the incident:

Quote:

“There is a war on language. These authoritarian, totalitarian ideologues want to scare you into silence by forcing racism into every word and thought. They have exploited our tolerance and our decency. They are the exact thing they acuse you of. #AlistairStewart”

Opinion from Douglas Murray, from the Spectator:

Katie Hopkins was banned from Twitter apparently at the instigation of Rachel Riley and an obscure campaign group:

Quote:

“I met with @Twitter yesterday with @imi_ahmed from @CCDHate and asked them among other things to review George Galloway & Katie Hopkins's presence on their platform. I am pleased to see that action appears to have been taken! This is what happens when they have the #WillToAct”

See also our post on the subject from this week:

The group posted some of the supposedly offensive tweets that led to Ms Hopkins' ban:

Quote:

“Hopkins used @Twitter to exploit the Rotherham grooming gangs case and suggest that all Muslims think paedophilia and sexual assault are acceptable. This is incitement and Islamophobia - slurring 2 billion people for their faith.”

In one of the tweets she apparently wrote:

If you follow a religion where your imaginary prophet is a paedophile, I suspect you think it is OK to rape young white girls too. Bastards
