Weekly Roundup Of News And Opinion - w/e 21 March

by The Participator – 22 Mar 2020

Our weekly roundup of news and opinion articles that we thought were important, mostly UK news but foreign news stories of interest to us as well. Please remember this is not intended to be a comprehensive news round up.

CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

A lot of headlines have been appearing during the crisis that include the word "could". It is somewhat difficult to figure out from the news media exactly which policies are in place already and which are planned.

It is probably best to visit the NHS website directly if you want to know the current health advice:

Quote:

NHS advice about coronavirus (COVID-19), including what to do if you think you have it and how to reduce your chances of getting it.

This page from the UK government is not aimed at the general public:

Quote:

Find guidance about coronavirus (COVID-19) for health professionals and other organisations.

A bill for a coronavirus "lockdown" has been prepared apparently, according to the Telegraph the government wants to push the bill through next week:

Social distancing measures were in place in the House of Commons. From the Express:

The NHS is under a lot of pressure, nobody was doubting that this week. From the Express:

Some health workers were finding the shelves in their local supermarkets were empty when they ended their shifts.

While schools were "on lockdown", many mosques were still open it seems (not much commentary to be found on this subject in the mainstream media). From MyLondon:

From order-order:

From ITV:

There was a call for workers to help on farms. From Farmers Weekly:

Those worried they will run out of toilet paper may wish to heed this advice. From the Express:

Migrants crossing the channel were tested for the virus ... and then brought to the UK apparently. From Breitbart:

President Trump was questioned by a reporter on his use of the phrase "Chinese Virus":

Quote:

A lot of very alarming articles have been appearing this week. From the Telegraph:

A dissenting voice, Peter Hitchens, had this to say (he refers to a "Panicdemic"):

From the Telegraph 2018:

Apparently there were 50,000 "excess deaths" in the UK in 2018 according to the above article.

Reports from China that the crisis there was coming to an end have been challenged. From Yahoo News:

Lee Anderson, Conservative MP for Ashfield totally believes in free speech BUT ... :

Quote:

“Free Speech. I totally believe in Free Speech and the media should always be allowed to scrutinise Parliament. But constantly undermining and spreading misinformation by a certain broadcaster during a national emergency is foolish and damaging. I raised this today in the House https://t.co/hIzfJbfmca”

Meanwhile protestors thought to be associated with Extinction Rebellion did not let a good crisis go to waste. From order-order:

Their catchphrase was "Pause the System". What do you think, should the system be paused? Please let us know in the comments below...

... tours at competitive prices. From the Argus:

ANTIFA FUNDING CLAIM - GERMANY

Finally to end on a lighter note, one dog owner found a novel way to walk his dog (amusing video clip in this tweet):
